LoessFest2017 - International Conference on Loess Research

Gorgan, Golestan Province, Northern Iran 8 – 12 October 2017

LoessFest2017 is announced by the Loess Focus Group of INQUA, Department of Soil Science at Gorgan University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, the Institute of Geography at University of Cologne, the Section of Geochronology and Isotope Hydrology at Leibniz Institute for Applied Geophysics, Hanover . The conference will take place 08 to 12 October 2017, in Gorgan, Golestan Province. The main scopes are: Loess and climate change, Potential and degradation of loess derived soils and Methods in loess research.

LoessFest 2017 aims to discuss recent issues on loess research that will further understanding of loess formation and climate change dynamics. Moreover, building a bridge to other climate archives of Eurasia will be envisaged. Knowledge gaps due to spatial and analytical limits will be elucidated.

The loess record of Northern Iran reflects numerous cycles of climate change and landscape evolution for the Middle to Late Quaternary period. The loess/palaeosol sequences represent the most important geo-archive of climate change in the region and provide an important link between loess deposits in South-eastern Europe and Central Asia.

The International Symposium on Aeolian Deposits in Earth History (ISADEH)

12-13 October 2015, Beijing China

Increasing evidence shows that extensive aeolian deposits existed in the Cenozoic and the deep past of Earth's history. The aeolian processes including dust production, transportation, and deposition are closely related to regional tectonic and glacial activity, hydrologic and atmospheric circulation, and climate conditions. The aeolian sequences are unique archives of palaeoclimates and palaeoenvironments. Studies of aeolian deposits provide a unique opportunity to explore the interactions of geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. We solicit contributions on all aspects of aeolian deposits from modern time to the deep past, including (1) modern processes, (2) geologic records and palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, and (3) modeling and methodology. Researches that focus on aeolian deposits on planets other than Earth are also welcome.

About Us - The History

At the 6th INQUA Congress in Poland in 1961 the INQUA Sub-Commission of European Loess Stratigraphy came into being as a specialist group operating within the remit of the Stratigraphy Commission. This initiative was due to Julius Fink of the University of Vienna and it was his vision of loess research in Europe which provided the structure and drove forward the activities of the sub-commission in the early days. In fact it was Fink’s vision which carried the Loess Commission through its entire 40 year existence. At the 8th INQUA Congress in Paris in 1969 the Sub-Commission was upgraded to full Commission status, and by then the programe was settled and a considerable amount of activity had occurred... Very interesting article about this organisation entitled "The INQUA Loess Commission as a Central European Enterprise" was published by Central European Journal of Geosciences in 2010 (authors: Ian J. Smalley, Slobodan B. Markovic and Ken O’Hara-Dhand). You can download the full paper here »

LoessFest'09

Aug. 31st – Sept. 3rd, 2009 | Novi Sad | Serbia

Lossfest’09 is planed as a conference which will consider all actual and will promote potential aspects of loess science. The concept is similar to the one presented at previous Loessfest held in Bonn and Heidelberg in 1999 organized by Edward Derbyshire, Ian Smalley, and Ludwig Zöller. Loessfest’99 has been probably the best ever organized international conference related to loess research. It has initiated several very successful scientific projects and resulted in two special issues published in leading international geoscience journals Earth Science Reviews and Quaternary International.
