History of research:

Demographic research has a long tradition at the Department of Geography, Tourism and Hotel Management, dating back to 1969 when the Faculty of Sciences and Mathematics was founded, with the Department of Geography as one of its founding units. After the establishment of the Department of Social Geography, population studies primarily continued to develop within this department, under whose auspices the most significant research and projects in the field of demography are still realized today. The focus of demographic research has always been on current population issues and topics of importance to the wider social community. Depopulation, uneven demographic development and migration movements are some of the issues that the demographic research group has been highlighting since the late 1980s and early 1990s. A significant contribution to these topics was made by the works of Dr. Slobodan Ćurčić, Dr. Branislav Đurđev and Dr. Jovan Plavša. The challenges of modern society have further directed the study of population dynamics, which today is based on an interdisciplinary approach, combining population geography and demography with ecology, epidemiology and sociology.

The Demographic Research Group studies the population from various aspects:

  • Population data and data sources
  • Population dynamics
  • Population ageing
  • Population migration
  • Population mortality
  • Population fertility
  • Population policy

The group's main activity is the presentation and implementation of scientific results in the wider social community.

Developing scientific and professional cooperation, at the national and international level, is one of the priorities in the work of the group. Through various programs (IPA, COST, Bilateral Cooperation, Erasmus+), the group members have achieved and continue to achieve significant cooperation with universities and research groups in the region and other European countries.

In addition, the group has also developed cooperation with: the Demographic Society of Serbia, and significant cooperation is also achieved with Matica Srpska, as well as with the Provincial Secretariat for Social Policy, Demography and Gender Equality and the Secretariat for Education, Regulations, Administration and National Minorities-National Communities. In cooperation with Matica Srpska and the Government of AP Vojvodina, the Secretariat for Social Policy, Demography and Gender Equality, the group was a co-organizer of the symposium dedicated to academician Berislav Berta Berić, which has been held every four years since 1997.
