Research at the Department

Research is one of the foundations of the work of the Department of Geography, Tourism and Hotel Management, which since its establishment in 1962 has contributed to the development of the geographical sciences and interdisciplinary research in Serbia and in the international academic community. Through research into natural and social processes, contemporary spatial change, environmental protection, tourism, hotel management and gastronomy, the Department links scientific knowledge with education and its practical application. Research is carried out through national and international projects, the work of specialised research groups, cooperation with universities and research institutions, the publication of scientific papers and the organisation of scientific meetings. Particular importance is given to an interdisciplinary approach, the use of modern technologies and the involvement of young researchers in scientific work.

Publishing is an important part of the Department's scientific identity. By publishing scientific journals, the Department contributes to the exchange of research results, connects the national and international scientific communities and makes current scientific knowledge more widely accessible.

The Department's publishing tradition also includes the popular science magazine "Gea", published from 2001 to 2011 with the aim of bringing geographical knowledge closer to the general public, especially teachers and pupils.

Research projects provide an important framework for developing research capacity, international cooperation and the application of scientific results. The Department's teachers and associates take part in projects funded through national and international programmes, investigating contemporary challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, the transformation of urban and rural areas, digitalisation and the protection of natural resources.

Organising scientific and professional conferences is an important part of the Department's activities. Through international congresses, symposia and thematic meetings, the Department contributes to the exchange of scientific results, the development of interdisciplinary cooperation and the networking of researchers from Serbia and abroad. Teachers and associates also actively take part in international conferences, presenting research results in geography, climatology, demography, geoinformatics, tourism, hotel management and other disciplines.

Research at the Department is also carried out through the work of specialised research groups and centres, whose activities ensure continuity of research, the professional development of researchers and the delivery of joint projects. Their work covers fundamental and applied research into natural and social processes, spatial modelling, environmental protection, sustainable development and the management of tourism resources.

Finally, international cooperation is an integral part of the Department's research activities. It takes place through joint research projects, bilateral research programmes, participation in international academic networks, researcher exchanges and joint publication of scientific results.

Cooperation with universities, research institutions and partner organisations enables the use of modern methodologies, knowledge transfer and the development of interdisciplinary research. Activities within European programmes and international research initiatives focusing on climate change, sustainable development, spatial transformation, tourism and education are of particular importance.
