CHANGES OF GLACIER LAKES USING MULTI-TEMPORAL REMOTE SENSING DATA: A CASE STUDY FROM INDIA
Authors: Praveen Kumar Rai, Varun Narayan Mishra
Abstract: The present study used the potential of Landsat multispectral data and ASTER-DEM data to identify the changes of glacier lakes in part of Chandra basin and surrounding of Himachal Pradesh of India from 1989 to 2013. The Barashigri, Chotashigri, Hamtahand Parvati glacier are the major glaciers within the area. The Landsat data of TM (1989 and 2009), ETM+ (2001) and OLI-TIRS (2013) sensors having different band combinations were analysed to monitor variation in the glacier lakes and area of glaciers and terminus whereas ASTER-DEM data was used for relief information. Glaciers terminus and glacial lakes were identified and mapped using false-colour composites (FCC) with band combinations of red, near-infrared (NIR) and shortwave infrared (SWIR), and a true-colour composite of red, green and NIR, of Landsat TM/ETM+ images and normalized difference water index (NDWI) methods. It is observed that the number of lakes in the study area increased by 18.69% during the past 34 years while it was increased from 68 in 1989 to 89 in 2013. During the analysis, it is also found that the snow and glacier covered area within this period is also reduced from 1,317.39 to 1,125.59 km2.

USING CLIMATE-SOIL-SOCIOECONOMIC PARAMETERS FOR A DROUGHT VULNERABILITY ASSESSMENT IN A SEMI-ARID REGION: APPLICATION AT THE REGION OF EL HODNA, (M’SILA, ALGERIA)
Authors: Meriem Boultif, Hassen Benmessaoud
Abstract: The objective of this study is to contribute in assessing and monitoring drought’s vulnerability by developing a GIS- based model to determine vulnerable areas to this natural hazard; the model utilizes a series of agricultural, statistical, meteorological and remotely sensed data, using GIS weighed ponderation and multicriteria analysis decision making, with the integration of three components: climatic sensibility, soil sensibility and socioeconomic sensibility. The result is a vulnerability map classified into five classes according to pixel values. Very Vulnerable class forms 19.46% of the study area, vulnerable class forms 32.81% and 21.37% of the area is not vulnerable, the study presents a modeling procedure of which the final results provide to researchers, users and decision makers important information on the environmental situation of the study area, for better prediction, and risk management.

PINUS SYLVESTRIS L. SUBSP. NEVADENSIS (CHRIST) HEYWOOD IN SOUTHERN SPAIN: AN ENDANGERED ENDEMIC MEDITERRANEAN FOREST
Authors: José Antonio Olmedo-Cobo, José Gómez-Zotano, José Luis Serrano-Montes
Abstract: Pinus sylvestris subsp. nevadensis is the most endangered pine in Spain. This taxon takes refuge in only two massifs of the Betic Cordillera –Sierra Nevada and Sierra de Baza–, where its forests represent the southernmost limit of the species global distribution, surviving under conditions of geographic, demographic and ecological marginality in the upper treeline boundary that makes them very vulnerable to any environmental change or external aggression. This research establishes for the first time, and for the entire Betic Cordillera, the locations and ecological patterns of these pine forests, their plant dynamic and floristic composition, and provides an updated map of the current and potential distribution area of this subspecies. The methodological process for this research has consisted of an integrated phytosociological and biogeographical analysis of vegetation and the resulting landscape, through fieldwork covering in as much detail as possible the distribution area of P. sylvestris in the Betic Cordillera, and a review of the bibliographic background. Taking into account the results, P. sylvestris subsp. nevadensis forests survive at present under hostile Mediterranean conditions due to the special physical characteristics of the microenvironments in which they have taken refuge, mainly the cool, relatively moist climate of their ecological niches and the relatively impermeable soils that forests occupy. However, there are significant ecological obstacles for the future preservation of this pine in southern Spain, and therefore it is necessary for the creation of programmes to protect these threatened endemic and post-glacial relict forests through continued monitoring of their evolution and further research studying the processes that make this ecosystem as a whole so unique and valuable.

Abstract: The Tri Morave wine region is the largest wine growing region in Serbia with nine vineyard regions and a total surface area of 286,929.90 ha. It includes the areas around three big rivers in Central Serbia; the wide lower basin of the Zapadna Morava River, the lower basin of the Južna Morava River and the wider upper basin of the Velika Morava River. The unique terroir of this region is reflected in the diversity of altitudes and terrain inclination that gives it its specific character and recognition and provides an excellent basis for producing wines with geographical indication. The main goal of this paper is to present all of the essential elements of terroir in this region as well as their interaction and influence on grapevines and wine production.

GEOGRAPHICAL CONTEXT OF THE REVEALED COMPETITIVENESS OF URBANISED AREAS IN HUNGARY EXCLUDING THE BUDAPEST AGGLOMERATION
Authors: György Vida, Gábor Dudás
Abstract: The processes of economic globalization have transformed socio-economic spatial functioning of the territories. These trends caused international competition between countries, regions, and settlements. According to this, nowadays, the examination of competitiveness has become an important research question in economic geography. The aim of our study is to examine the scale-dependent processes of revealed competitiveness of agglomerations, agglomerating areas, and settlement groups in Hungary excluding the Budapest agglomeration. The study was based on quantitative research methods using an empirical database and mathematical statistical methods. Firstly, we conducted a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of revealed competitiveness in different geographical scales and afterwards, we utilized the method of Spatial Autocorrelation on a settlement level. Our findings showed that there are significant spatial differences among the performance of the Hungarian urbanised areas. The east-west dichotomy considering competitiveness despite the European Unions’ developmental funds is still present between Agglomerations, Agglomerating areas, and Settlement groups in Hungary. Moreover, according to our calculations, intra-regional polarization and scale mechanism are in connection with revealed competitiveness and it is justified by spatial autocorrelation.

NOTES FOR A DIDACTIC MODEL OF CRITICAL GEOGRAPHY. ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION OF A CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE WITH UNIVERSITY STUDENTS FROM GALICIA (SPAIN)
Authors: Xosé Carlos Macía Arce, Francisco Rodríguez Lestegás, Francisco Xosé Armas Quintá
Abstract: This article presents a didactic model of critical geography, based on instruction recommendations for the teaching and learning of geography and social sciences. This is all with a very clear idea: to depart from a descriptive and reflective geography and move to an active and critical geography. Geography in which students participate in the construction of knowledge and increase their ability to reflect on geographical issues. The proposed didactic model drives active and critical geography in the classrooms. It starts with the analysis of territorial problems in Europe and makes them the object of research and reflection. The idea is not to dictate geography in classrooms but to introduce methodologies, resources and sources to carry out geographic research with students. With this idea in mind, the second part of the article examines the value of our didactic model through the analysis of fifteen research projects on European natural spaces carried out in the academic years of 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 with 74 university students in training to be geography teachers in secondary education. The results show that the students’ didactic expectations grow when given geographic research to do as teaching practice.
