Centre for foreign languages for specific purposes

At the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the study of foreign languages for specific purposes and academic foreign languages occupies a significant place at all levels of study. English and German are taught as compulsory and as elective subjects. In addition to these, there are also other languages of choice (Spanish, French or Italian). The Centre for Foreign Languages for Specific Purposes is located at the Department of Geography, Tourism and Hotel Management, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. It was founded in October 2007 on the initiative of the Chair of Social Geography and Teaching Methodology, and it brings together teachers in all ranks who teach foreign languages at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. One of the goals of founding the Centre is to conduct research in the field of applied linguistics and foreign language teaching methodology in higher education with the aim of improving teaching and methods of learning foreign languages at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The main research topics include areas of applied linguistics, such as contrastive analysis, corpus analysis, metadiscourse analysis, multimodal research, then research into the experience of language learning in a specific context – professional and/or academic, language learning strategies, development of specific communicative competencies in the language for specific purposes, evaluation of theoretical positions in applied linguistics and language for specific purposes, cultural aspects of learning/teaching the language for specific purposes, needs analysis, etc. Other professional interests include continuous professional development and development of curricula of academic language for specific purposes and elements of the teaching process at the tertiary level in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and the Bologna Process. Finally, the Centre also enables the establishment of cooperation with other similar centres and research groups in our country and abroad.
