The Petrovaradin fortress is the first systematically investigated Middle Paleolithic site in Vojvodina. The investigations within the fortress were carried out in 2003 and 2004 and the artifacts have been found in the layers of loess attributed to MIS3 and MIS4. The spatial distribution and characteristics of the artifacts indicate that the base camp had been situated here. In the industry are prevailing sidescrapers and irregular tools on flakes of flint and quartz. There were identified the Levallois technology, Charentian elements and scarce backed sidescrapers. The technological variability of the remains bears witness to the cultural and social connection of the Neanderthal communities within wide region of the Carpathian basin.
